Think about potential employers, think about how your skills and knowledge can enhance an organization. If you can't think of occupations that can use people schooled in the arts and humanities, then go over to Before You Search and check out our information on Exploring Career Options.

I have a degree in Music (Performance) from the Boston Conservatory. After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance.

General Resources

These cross the art disciplines (visual and performing), so check these before you go further down the page.

What Can I Do With My Liberal Arts Degree?, Occupational Outlook Quarterly, Winter 2007-08 (Vol. 51, Number 4) [PDF]
The Nutshell: "Don’t worry: Your liberal arts training is solid career preparation. Find out how your degree helps make you marketable." This is a marvelous article from some liberal arts majors now employed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. I've linked to the summary information, but the full article is a PDF document and requires Adobe's free Acrobat reader to read and print.
The Art Career Project
I have no information on who is operating this site, but it is unique in the information offered, so I am listing it with some reservations. What this site does have, and what I will encourage you to read, is numerous articles covering the many fields of art (graphic and visual and performing) but this site is strongest in the graphic/visual area, introducing you to new ideas and new fields that are not well covered by career resources. I have to say I would not have thought of some of these myself, but they really are arts.
Get In Media
...provides career information including company profiles, job descriptions, articles, and resources in the fields of music, games, film & TV, and live event production. You can read profiles of folks in the industry doing various jobs they love (and have been doing for years). Sony Music Entertainment
....a global recorded music company with a roster of current artists that includes a broad array of both local artists and international superstars, as well as a vast catalog that comprises some of the most important recordings in history. Yes, they are hiring. No, these aren't openings for the next big thing in music entertainment, but for those of you interested in the behind-the-scenes jobs of production, finance, royalties, graphic design, etc., then you should look here. Lots of entry-level opportunities. At this time they can only consider candidates who currently reside in and have authorization to work in the United States.
ArtJob.org
...fee-based service listing jobs, internships, fellowships and other employment opportunities in the arts, including "visual arts, arts nonprofits, performing arts, commercial art and design firms, film, public arts agencies, academic arts positions, galleries, internships, fellowships, conferences, commissions and more." Sorry, but you can't preview the database without paying, but you can read the articles and use their list of related sites. Operated by WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation. Check their website for links to more organizations and resources.
Arts Consulting Group

They handle searches for executive directories, presidents, and other senior managers of arts and humanities organizations, such as orchestras, museums, and performing arts centers. They also frequently match private consultants with appropriate backgrounds to short-term consulting projects. Qualified candidates can review a list of current searches and submit a resume where appropriate, or submit a resume for consideration as a private consultant. You can also join their mailing list to receive consulting project listings as soon as they are announced.
Arts Council Jobs from the Arts Council England
This free user-friendly website lists details current vacancies and opportunities in the UK arts community along with and Arts News (arts events, news and press releases). Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts in England, distributing public money from Government and the National Lottery. Cultural organizations in this state, both non-profit and commercial, can submit listings for any position within their organization (the MCC reserves the right to remove any listing that does not meet these criteria). These are internships, part-time, full-time, seasonal, volunteer, and other opportunities as teachers, administrators, IT pros, bookkeepers, and pretty much anything else needed to run a group of this kind. And remember Massachusetts is the home of organizations ranging from the Higgins Armory Museum to the Peabody Essex Museum, The Boston Early Music Festival and the Berkshires, Jacob's Pillow Dance and the Boston Ballet. It is an amazingly rich and diverse place to be. Be sure to peruse their list of "Other Resources", a nice guide to other online resources for jobs and opportunities in the arts. And while on this page, click on that big "Check Out Our Member's Job Sites" for a list of (and links to) opportunities with MCC member organizations. A treasure!

Jobs are listed by field, but each includes a link that says "view all the jobs listed by this employer."
iCrewz
I am only listing this because it is unique it its offering. iCrewz is a site for the crews that make the film industry work. Crews, not actors. They list jobs, available locations, resumes of available crew members with varying levels of experience and various areas of expertise, and equipment for sale. And I saw mention of internships as I was searching for comments on this site. I did not view anything that is not public as the site requires a paid membership, but $40 a year is not a stretch for most starving directors and indy filmmakers. Listings are only available for 30 days, so if you like this site you will need to visit regularly. No contact information on the site, but the domain registration is public and Google searching will turn up a few names behind the scenes. Please note that the site is entirely Flash driven, so persons who use assistive software to view websites may have trouble viewing this site. For all others, it means you not only have to have Flash installed on your computer, you must also have the most up-to-date web browsers, so make sure you are ready before you visit.

Users may be familiar with their annual print directory with its thousands of listings of arts organizations, managers, performing arts organizations (orchestras, operas, etc.), concert series, festivals (including theatre and dance), and more. The site is divided into three sections, and includes both subscriber-based and free areas. The good news: the Career Center is free!
Musicalchairs.info
..."the world's best website for classical music jobs." They link to audition announcements from organizations around the world, list competitions and the like, and have a board for posting your cv or instrument for sale. They also have directories of organizations, conservatories, and musicians. Pretty interesting, and a nice way to review the international audition scene (brush up on your non-English languages). Not just for instrumentalists, but not as well developed for vocalists.
MusicalOnline
...a wonderful collection of resources for the performing arts community. Links to organizations, resources, even job listings! Academic research links, orchestras, competitions, management.....I'm going surfing!
Operissimo
...so what do you want to know about the world of Opera? Pick a performer and look him or her up (all in German), pick a composer and get a list of operas he or she composed, pick an opera and view a list of the roles, their voiceparts, and a short list of performers who have appeared in each, or pick a country and view a list of opera companies and opera houses, many with schedules and links to webpages (some of which have job openings posted. Maybe not for the major roles, but for other stuff.)
The Savvy Musician
"You may be good, but are you savvy? Success as a professional musician requires much more than talent and luck! Whether hoping to augment your income, stand out from a competitive field, add variety to activities, or erect an empire, savvy musicians find ways to thrive under any circumstances." Complementing the book of the same title by Dr. David Cutler, this site offers advice, resources, and much more to anyone wanting to make music his or her career. It examines many of the issues we never learn about in school (and yes, I count myself among that group), such as how to really make a living at this, marketing, and much more. Parents, if you have a child who wants to be a professional musician, point him or her to this website and consider buying the book too!

Military Music Organizations

These organizations offer numerous opportunities for all musicians. Many of these "bands" include string ensembles, popular and jazz musical groups, and choruses. They also hire audio engineers, composers/arrangers, and even conductors. I get to play with members of some of the DC-based organizations, and these men and women are amazing musicians.

Located aboard the Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia, the Navy School of Music provides specialized training for selected personnel of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, and is the first stop after basic training for instrumentalists and vocalists seeking to join the ranks of America's military bands. Philosophy

Peter Suber, a professor of Philosopy at Earlham University, compiled the first major directory of online resources in this topic, including several resources useful for a job search. With his permission, I copied his job list to my site, updating links and access. Since many of those sites are no longer available, I am removing his actual list in favor of my own, but I will tag the listings which came from his list and are still available.
