Website work, programming, writing, and graphic design seem to be the biggest areas, but there are many other opportunities here as well. There are fees for the "talent" as well as the businesses.

...."provides freelancers and consultants with project opportunities, great career advice, and essential services." Unlike some of the other freelance sites, this one does not want to turn you into a W-2 employee. All they do is give you a place to post your own profile, review projects that are available, and gives you advisors to help answer some of your work/life/tax questions. Free Registration is encouraged but not required unless you want to post your profile. Their "gig" database has a pretty wide selection of opportunities listed.

oDesk

...based in Menlo Park, CA, oDesk advertises itself as "The Marketplace for Online Workteams". This free service connects employers (buyers) to contract talent (providers), helps to track actual time spent and progress made on a specific project, and processes payments. Employers (buyers) create a work room on the site where the contract talent (providers) log in and out as they work on the project. No, oDesk is not tracking your actual work, just the time you spend on it. New Providers are encouraged to use the free skill tests to improve their profiles and attract buyers. oDesk requires buyers to pay with a verified credit card, and they will handle payment disputes. Please read their guarantees, and note that they have both verified and unverified buyers in their "jobs" database. Be cautious about accepting unclear assignments and make sure you and the buyer both meet the requirements for oDesk to guarantee everything.
