: About the Guide
The March 1994 Edition
Editor's Note: Below is a snapshot of the very first Riley Guide on the internet in March 1994. Written by the site's founder, Margaret Dikel (formerly Margaret Riley), the snapshot gives a slice of internet and World Wide Web history right at the very beginning of the WWW's mass popularity.
When the Riley Guide first went online in January 1994, it was a text file loaded on a gopher at the University of Michigan. Gopher was the "cool network" at the time, NCSA had only recently released Mosaic, the first graphical browser for this thing called the World Wide Web, Netscape wasn't even a blip on the IPO charts, and Microsoft really wasn't interested in the Web. What you are looking here is what the first users of this guide saw -- plain text which was not formatted very well. Just for fun, I have added in a little bit of where are they now so you can see who is still around and what they are doing now.
Hope you enjoy this little bit of Internet history.
--Margaret
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND JOB RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET Margaret F. Riley March 1994 All of these services are available through the Internet. You will need an Internet account to access these services. At this time, all of these services are offered to the user at no charge; however, be aware that there are employment services/job listings available on the Internet which do charge a fee. This is by no means a full and comprehensive list. If you find a new list or service that you think should be included, please send the name and access information (telnet, usenet, gopher, etc.) and Internet address to Margaret Riley. I. USENET JOB LISTINGS Access these lists through the usenet news reading system. Before posting to any group, read the news generated there for a few days so you can get a feel for the group. Improper postings can invoke much e-mail being sent to you with comments. Worldwide Newsgroups misc.jobs.misc discussions about jobs and job hunting. Do not post resumes or jobs here. misc.jobs.offered general positions available. misc.jobs.offered.entry entry-level positions available. misc.jobs.contract contract positions available. Might be short-term. misc.jobs.resumes post your resume here. Please post in ascii format only. Alternate Hierarchy Newsgroups ne.jobs jobs available in the New England area. ba.jobs jobs in the San Francisco Bay area. Locally this can be accessed through gopher (see below). us.jobs.resumes Post your resume for US positions. us.jobs.offered US jobs offered. us.jobs.contract US contract positions. us.jobs.misc Miscellaneous jobs in the US. bionet.jobs Job openings in the biological sciences, or professional level jobs that support the work of biological scientists. (CAREER CONNECTIONS) H.E.A.R.T., "Human resources Electronic Advertising & Recruiting Tool," is a menu driven system with presentations of career opportunities. There is NO charge to the job seeker at this time. This system is supported by the member companies so they may reach the most qualified candidates for their advertised positions. You can search for positions by geographic location or job title, and you can apply for jobs through this system. In order to do this, you must create a "profile," so it's best to have a copy of your resume at hand when you begin looking here. III. SERVICES VIA GOPHER All of these services can be accessed through GOPHER, a menu-driven worldwide system of university and organization information systems. ACADEME THIS WEEK (THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION)Note from Margaret: Still online at http://chronicle.com
The Jobs Listings from the current edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education are listed here on the day of publication. Position listings can be searched by geographic location, the Chronicle's list of job terms, or by keywords of your own choosing. This is the best source for positions with colleges and universities in the U.S., and many international institutions and research companies list positions here also. gopher chronicle.merit.com or go through the menus All the Gopher Servers/ Academe This Week/ Jobs/ ACADEMIC POSITION NETWORK (APN)
The Academic Position Network (APN) is an on-line position announcement service. Announcements include faculty, administration and staff positions as well as announcements for graduate assistant and fellowship positions. The announcement remains on the network until removal instructions are received from the placing institution. All entries represent positions where searches are currently in process. The APN files may be browsed as they are organized: by country, state, or institution. The entire text may be searched using a word or combination of words separated by "and" or "or." There is no charge to browse or search the APN files by authorized Internet educational users. gopher wcni.cis.umn.edu All the Gopher Servers/ Academic Position Network/ ONLINE CAREER CENTER (MSEN INC.)Note from Margaret: In 1998, OCC was purchased by Monster.com., who closed it down on January 4, 1999.

purposes. Organizations pay a membership fee to join this
service for the purpose of recruiting new employees. Eligible
members include industrial, corporate, institutional, health care,

are permitted on this service, so blind listings to an OCC
box are valid listings for member organizations.

FINANCIAL ECONOMICS NETWORK (FEN)Note from Margaret: Still available online at http://www.ssrn.com/fen/
The Financial Economics Network (FEN) was formed in late 1993. There are now more than 3,000 subscribers, with nearly 250 being added each week. In less than a month FEN has become the largest electronic network in the world linking people with scholarly and practical interests in business and economics. The founders of the Financial Economics Network are Michael Jensen, Harvard University, Wayne Marr, Clemson University, and John Trimble, Washington State University. The Network consists of a master subscription, called AFA-FIN, with 40 channels or sublists. Currently 39 channels are available to AFA-FIN subscribers. There are two channels for posting of job announcements and resumes. AFA-JOB (Job Postings) AFA-RES (Resumes) Currently, the structure of the list, divided into channels, is complicated. The organizers are working on getting the channels on Usenet, to make life easier for the more advanced user. Access to the Network is free. But you must request a subscription to be included. Please contact Wayne Marr at Clemson University or John Trimble at Washington State University; trimble@vancouver.wsu.edu; telephone: (206) 737-2039. marrm@clemson.clemson.edu; telephone: (803) 656-0796 fax: (803) 653-5516 Send either person an e-mail requesting a subscription to AFA-FIN, the Financial Economics Network and the AFA-JOB or AFA-RES channel.
