I am working my way through the backlog of link requests, but some weeks go better than others. This week I ended up doing some much needed maintenance on various sections of the website including the Career Research Center, so only a few new things were reviewed.

For those of you on Facebook or wondering Facebook is worth your time and/or effort, I have set up a Facebook page for The Riley Guide so I can send out news or new resources as I find them. Please consider joining us!

I have also broken down and set up a Twitter account for Riley Guide if that's one of your connection points.

New This Week

  • Jobs for Diverse Audiences: The 50+ Workforce -- I've added 2 new sites for "boomers who want to make a change." Their words, not mind. One, WhatsNext.com, helps you find your "Career 2.0" while Encore.org encourages those of us who can call ourselves Boomers (yes, that's me too) to make a change to a career that makes a difference. These resources are actually good for anyone who is facing the "overqualified" label or who wants to make a career change at a point in life when your kids might think you've completely lost it.
  • Veterans & Transitioning Personnel: DOD / Government-Sponsored Services -- added DoD Veterans: Opportunities to Use Your Abilities, a website from the DoD outlining opportunities for men and women who have honorably served the US an opportunity to continue your service as a DoD civilian employee. This sites does not offer actual job listings (you are referred to those resources), but it answers your questions about applications and Veterans Preference.
  • Arts & Humanities: Music -- added a link to The Savvy Musician, a website (and book) with advice and resources to help musicians "find ways to thrive under any circumstances". I think the book would make a great holiday present for anyone considering a career in music.

Next Update: December 3

I am taking next week off. Well, not really, but I have got to clean the house and do some baking in advance of Thanksgiving Dinner, so I know I won't get to the website. However, if something good comes up I'll post it to Facebook and send out a Tweet, so think about joining us on either or both.

Free Job Hunt Boot Camp November 14 in Germantown MD

Malcolm O. Munro, "the Career Fitness Coach", is offering a free Job Hunt Boot Camp in Germantown, MD, on November 14. This 3-hour session will cover cover letters and resumes, online resources, interviewing, negotiation, and much more. To learn more or to register, visit http://www.jobhuntbootcamp.com/.

Just so you know....

I have reviewed everything submitted in August, so I believe I am on track to review everything submitted before November 15 by the end of 2009.

The Riley Guide now has a Facebook page. My friends Susan Joyce and Bill Frank have been on me to Twitter, and Susan Ireland is an active blogger, so I am once again behind the times and running to catch up. I already use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends, so I'm happy to add in a Riley Guide page where I can post news nuggets I hear, updates to my site, particularly useful things, and where you can post tips, share stories, or even tell me about your favorite sites and services. So please check out The Riley Guide on Facebook and become a fan!

I've also added in the AddThis widget so you can share content from this site with others.

I've also decided to take down the TopEmploymentGuide.com website and relocate all of that content into this site. I had forgotten how hard it is to create a new site from the bottom up, and I just don't have the necessary time to maintain it let alone develop it the way it should be. I'll be making that move in the next couple of weeks.

Alert for Folks in the DC / MD / VA area

New This Week

I woke up Monday with a nasty cold, so I did not get much done this week. However, I am into the resources and sites submitted in August, so I still hope to get to everything received by November 15 before the end of the calendar year.
  • Job Search Guidance: The Great Career Advisors -- added a link to Pete Weddle's blog Work Strong. This is a program for personal career management in which you pursue a personal Career Fitness Program much the same way to pursue a personal physical fitness program. As always, the advice offered is terrific and not your standard run-of-the-mill jargon.
  • Executive Search Firms: Working with Recruiters & Search Firms -- added a review of How to Work with Headhunters by Nick Corcodilos (AskTheHeadhunter.com). It is a marvelous guide to the in-and-out of recruiting and how best to interact with and respond to calls from recruiters and headhunters.
  • Other Meta-Guides for the Internet Job Search -- added a link to the Top 100 Job Site Niches for 2009 compiled by InternetInc.com. This isn't the Top 100 Niche Job Sites, but the top 100 field- or function-specific job searches identified by Google with an accompanying list of the top 3 or 4 sites in each field.
  • Consider More Training: Seminars & Short-Term Training -- updated this heading a bit to include both short-term seminars plus education and training programs where you can earn a certificate, diploma, or award in less than 2 years, and I also listed the new Short-Term Training Finder from CareerInfoNet.org
  • Certification Resources: General Info Sources -- I listed the new Short-Term Training Finder from CareerInfoNet.org in this section too.
  • Networking Tips: The Art of Netiquette -- added 2 new resources here. The first is BusinessEmailEtiquette.com, a blog on this very topic authored by Judith Kallos, an expert in this field. The second is this marvelous guide to E-mail Guidelines and Etiquette in Your Job Search (and on the job, and in life generally) from the Career Services at Virginia Tech. Both are terrific.
  • Cover Letters: Writing Cover Letters -- I added the "E-mail Guidelines and Etiquette in Your Job Search (and on the job, and in life generally)" from the Career Services at Virginia Tech to this spot too since it has much to say about submitting cover letters and resumes via email and even negotiations.
  • Networking & Support Groups: Nationwide Listings & Organizations -- I've updated my review of the Crossroad Career Network. Since I last visited their site in 2005, they have greatly expanded their network and their online services. Right now, they are offering free online memberships to individual who are not near one of their member churches.

Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour this weekend!

I have reviewed everything submitted to me through July 2009.

Federal Legislative Alert for Active Duty Military Personnel

On October 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 2647). The new law includes an expansion of the recently-enacted exigency and caregiver leave provisions for military families under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA).

In January 2008, Congress amended the FMLA to provide:

Exigency leave -- up to 12 weeks of leave for urgent needs related to a reservist family member’s (spouse, son, daughter, or parent) call to active service.

H.R. 2647 expands the exigency leave benefits to include family members of active duty service members. Under current law, only family members of National Guard and Reservists are eligible for “exigency leave.
Caregiver leave -- up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave to an employee to care for a family member (spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin) who is injured while serving on active military duty.
H.R. 2647 expands the caregiver leave provision to include veterans who are undergoing medical treatment, recuperation or therapy for serious injury or illness that occurred any time during the five years preceding the date of treatment.
These provisions are effective upon enactment, so spread the word!

I am pushing through the requests for listing that I have received through the year. As of today I've gone through everything received before July 10, 2009.

New This Week

  • Arts & Humanities: Graphics / Animation / Electronic Games / Creative Media -- added a link to GameIndustry.biz, "a market-leading online resource for news and information about the global videogames industry".
  • Job Resources for Canada -- added a link to ResumeResources.ca from Audrey Prenzel. One of her specialities is working with transitioning and former members of the Canadian Forces, and she has terrific info for these men and women along with information on how to connect with her for free via Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Plaxo.
  • Consider Relocating: Cost of Living & Demographics -- added Numbeo, a free Internet database with international cost of living and property investment indicators (i.e., housing costs).

  • Consider Relocating: Moving and Relocation Guides -- added LocalMovers.com to our list, a resource for finding companies that handle moves of 99 miles or less. This site also has great information on how to qualify a mover (checking for the DOT license is one step) and how to avoid scams.
  • Local US Jobs: California -- added a link to CalGrants, the California State Student Aid Commission. Yes, funding levels are uncertain at this time, but this is your source for information on education grants from the state.
  • Finance & Accounting: Executive Search Firms -- added Titan Executive Search Partners, providing retained and contingency search services for all financial disciplines
  • across all industries.
  • Manufacturing: Abrasives -- added this category and links to open executive positions listed with AbrasivesMall.com as well as Griding & Abrasives Magazine.
  • Executive Search Firms: S T U -- added TEM Consulting. Based in Tokyo and Hong Kong, TEM Consulting works with the banking industry (commercial, corporate and investment banking, as well as private equity/venture capital) and has recently added the advanced technology market.
  • Executive Job Search and Support Services -- added 2 executive networking and support groups, the Executive Network Group of Greater Chicago (ENG) and TLA, the Technology Leaders Association.

September 17, 2009

Life is good. Orchestra rehearsals begin tonight, I go on vacation in 11 days (September 29 through October 7), and just this week I received via Facebook an email from a ballet dancer from Italy who was one of my roommates my first semester in college. She went home after that first semester, so we have not seen nor heard from each other in almost 30 years. This is on top of re-connecting with many long-lost friends from high school, college, my life in Boston, people met at past conferences, and the opportunity to canoodle with family and current friends online (including nieces and nephews). I really feel blessed that people in my past have sought me out like this.

If you want to "friend" me, please note that I restrict my Facebook friends to Friends, but go ahead and shoot me a message. Colleagues who would like to be "in my network" are welcome to connect with me on LinkedIn.

September 10, 2009

I'm tired today. It might be allergies (ragweed, ick) or the fact that I was at my cousin's wedding last night and didn't get until late. But in any case, it feels like all of the good effects of my last vacation have completely vanished, so I'm taking another one at the end of September. I'll warn you when the time comes.

Addendum to Our Article on Using ReferenceUSA...

Got a note from a friend in California who works in a county employment center. He noted that his local public library only purchases a subset of ReferenceUSA, but he remembered the Employer Locator feature on CareerInfoNet.org. This database is licensed from the same vendor, InfoUSA, and while it searches a little differently and displays the data a little differently, it is a very similar database. If you don't have access to ReferenceUSA, or if you only have access to a minor subset, try the Employer Locator instead! And remember, your taxes dollars are hard are work here just like they are in your public library.

New This Week

  • Jobs for a Diverse Audience: The 50+ Workforce -- added a link to Retire and Consult.com, a site dedicated to persons who have retired but still want to be involved in the world of work, offering their extensive skills and expertise to companies and employers who have a need for their assistance.
  • Jobs for a Diverse Audience:General Resources -- added a link to JD Diversity.com, "committed to promoting diversity in the legal profession by creating an online community of diverse law students, professors, practitioners, and legal employers, allowing for information-sharing and honest communication."
  • Lawyers & Other Legal Professionals: Legal Recruiters and Job Sites -- JD Diversity has been listed here in addition to its listing under Diversity.
  • Finance & Accounting: Executive Search Firms -- added Stephen James Associates, a search firm specializing in the recruitment and placement of accounting and finance, private equity and venture capital, banking and asset management, human resources, and sales and marketing professionals. They handle private retained searches but they also recruit and the mid to senior level and post many of those searches on their website.
  • Finance & Accounting: Insurance -- added a link to InsuranceJobs.com, listing jobs of all kinds in all areas dealing with insurance and linking you to a network of sites specializing in various jobs in the insurance industry.
  • Building & Construction: Resources for Executives -- added Jordan Frank & Associates, "an executive search firm specializing in the construction and renewable energy industries." Their practices cover Construction (including Architecture and Engineering), Heavy Civil / Infrastructure, and Renewable Energy, and they offer mid-to-senior level listings as well as senior executive listings through their Retained Search Group.
  • Education & Academe: Executive Search Firms -- after speaking with a university VP from a college in the South, I have posted a link to the list of Search Firms provided by Academic360.com. All of the firms listed here have handled administrative searches for academic institutions, but not all of them specialize in this particular industry.
  • Job Lead Banks: U - Z -- added a link to WiserWorker.com. In some places it says it is a site for "senior" workers, in other places it says "baby boomers", but I think the jobs are more for the "not quite yet 50" set.
  • Jobs in Germany -- added a link to the Germany-USA Career Center, "the leading recruiting source for U.S.-German and German-American markets, provides employment, career and search services for companies in the US and in Germany."
  • Jobs in the UK -- added a link to Nurses.co.uk, a website for (you guessed it) Nursing jobs in the UK and some other locations. It is a terrific site! I'm thinking of dividing the UK into industry categories. Any thoughts?
  • Jobs in California -- added a link to Working World, a free site with job listings, job fairs, and much more for the Los Angeles area.
  • Healthcare & Medicine: Nursing -- added WorkingNurse, "the companion website to Working Nurse magazine, which has been direct mailed to the RNs in Southern California since 2003."
  • Earth / Environmental: Multiple Fields -- added Let's Work Green, a smaller site that hosts its own job database while also sourcing environmental and "green job" listings from across the Internet.
